Mercedes A-class (2018): hatchback spotted for the first time

Mercedes is launching a new generation of the A-Class (W177) in early 2018. While there are currently five body styles, eight model variants will be offered in the future, including the classic hatchback.

Our prototype hunter caught this model during test runs. At first glance, it is clear that the sedan will not have straight lines — a typical limousine, but four doors and a light coupe shape. Mercedes unveiled the design in early 2017 in Shanghai at the Concept A Sedan studio. This show car not only borrowed the future design of the A-Class, but was presented in coupe form.

A-class sedan with redesigned stern

There are only minor changes between the now captured prototype and the car shown at the Shanghai show. The front pillar remained the same as that of the hatchback, it is quite wide. The trunk doesn’t look as dynamic, and the flashy rear of the studio is also missing, as is the rather ribbed apron. The narrow ride height remains, as do the narrow taillights, of course the rear of the series drops much less progressively. There were exterior rear-view mirrors on the doors, pronounced side bulges and a long panoramic roof.

Anyone expecting an A-class sedan here will be disappointed as the model will hit the Chinese market for the first time in late 2018. With all the development costs, the A-class sedan should appear in Europe sooner or later.

Less weight, more space, new interior

Eight A-Class body styles (Hatchback, CLA, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA, B-Class, Sedan, GLB and SLA Classic Coupé) are based on the MFA2 platform, which reduces vehicle weight and makes the body healthier . The wheelbase has also been increased by two centimeters, which will especially appeal to rear passengers. In particular, Mercedes has redesigned its upscale interior. Studio EQ was the first to see the light of day with screens located directly on the dashboard, without a cab roof, as seen in the photo provided by our prototype photographer. It is not clear whether analog devices will find a place in the basic version.

It is clear that the new Otto engines will thump under the hood, M254 two-liter direct injection and E-compressor. Moreover, between the A250 and the powerful one for 400 hp. The AMG 45 will have a 280 hp version. Smaller diesel units will be supplied by partner Renault. They are joined by hybrid versions, and on electricity alone it can travel about 100 kilometers. A Mercedes A-Class hatchback will likely start at around €25,000, while an A-Class sedan could be around €2,000 more expensive.
